Graphs that reveal and preserve patterns — Evaluate worksheet
Original practice. Write explanations that distinguish observations, evidence and claims.
Name: __________________________ Date: ______________
Question 1
A plot is intended to have a linear x-axis, but equal numerical increments are drawn at unequal physical distances. Its y-axis lacks a quantity and unit label, and its error bars are undefined. Critique the plot and describe how to repair it.
Question 2
Write a prediction statement beyond the measured range that clearly states its limitation.
Teacher answer key — 2 questions
Model responses identify the essential ideas. Accept scientifically correct alternatives that address the question; wording need not match exactly.
- On the intended linear x-axis, equal numerical increments must occupy equal physical distances; the inconsistent scale distorts the relationship. Unequal point spacing can be correct for unequal x values, and a clearly labelled logarithmic axis uses a different spacing convention. Replot with a consistent linear scale, label the y quantity and unit, and define what the error bars represent.
- For example: a model predicts longer time at 10 cm, but 10 cm was not measured and stability may change. Test it before treating the extrapolation as supported evidence.
