1. Key Ideas

  • The subject is the variable written by itself.
  • Use inverse operations to rearrange formulas.
  • Rearrange first when the required variable is not the subject.

2. Success Criteria

  • I can rearrange formulas with one variable occurrence.
  • I can substitute after rearranging.
  • I can check a rearranged formula with numbers.

3. Short Answer Questions

1. Rearrange $d = st$ to make $s$ the subject. 2 marks

2. Rearrange $d = st$ to make $t$ the subject, then find $t$ when $d = 240$ km and $s = 80$ km/h. 3 marks

3. Rearrange $C = 2\pi r$ to make $r$ the subject. 2 marks

4. Use $r = \frac{C}{2\pi}$ to find $r$ when $C = 31.4$ cm and $\pi \approx 3.14$. 2 marks

5. Rearrange $A = bh$ to make $h$ the subject, then find $h$ when $A = 96$ m2 and $b = 12$ m. 3 marks

4. Success Criteria Proof

Use simple numbers to check that $s = \frac{d}{t}$ is equivalent to $d = st$. 3 marks
