Match each word to its meaning
Draw a line connecting each word on the left to its correct meaning on the right. Or write the matching letter next to each word.
| Word | Your answer | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| Magnetic field | A. A coil of wire that produces a magnetic field when current flows through it | |
| Field line | B. A piece of iron, such as a nail, that makes an electromagnet much stronger | |
| Solenoid | C. The region around a magnet where its force acts on magnetic materials or other magnets | |
| Electromagnet | D. A line we draw to show the shape and direction of a magnetic field | |
| Iron core | E. A temporary magnet made by passing current through a coil of wire |
Fill the gap
Choose the correct word from the word bank to complete each sentence. Two words will not be used.
A magnetic is the region around a magnet where its force acts. Outside a magnet, field lines point from the pole to the pole. You can map a magnetic field by sprinkling iron on paper over a magnet. An electromagnet is made by passing an electric through a coil of wire. Adding an core inside the coil makes the electromagnet much stronger.
1. A student says: "Magnetic field lines can cross each other when the field is strong." Is the student correct? Explain your answer.
2. Name the three things you need to build a simple electromagnet, and write one safety rule you must follow.
