Because… chain

Fill in the missing steps. This chain follows how the Marshall and Warren ulcer idea grew from a doubted hypothesis into trusted medical knowledge.

Marshall and Warren publish their idea that a bacterium causes stomach ulcers (a hypothesis)
Expert scientists peer review the work and other labs replicate the experiments
Many teams around the world keep getting the same result

Overall conclusion:

Real-world context

The radio telescope at Parkes in New South Wales, nicknamed Murriyang, listens to faint signals from deep space. It was built using ideas about radio waves worked out by many earlier scientists. Today, astronomers from all over the world book time on it, share what they find, and add their results to a growing pool of knowledge. The CSIRO, Australia's national science agency, runs many projects this way, with large teams sharing and checking each other's work.

(a) Decide whether each example below shows collaboration, replication, peer review, or building on earlier work. Write your choice next to each one.

Apply 4 marks
ExampleWhat it shows
Astronomers from many countries share results from the same telescope
A second team repeats an experiment and gets the same result
Expert scientists check a study for mistakes before it is published
Engineers use earlier discoveries about radio waves to build the telescope

(b) Explain why building on the work of others helps science move forward faster than starting from zero each time.

Apply 3 marks

(c) Put these three words in order from least evidence to most evidence: scientific theory, hypothesis, scientific law. Explain how you decided.

Apply 2 marks

1. A friend says "I did the experiment once and it worked, so my idea must be true." Explain why one result is not enough, and describe how replication would make the idea more trustworthy.

2. Why is it useful that scientists publish their work so that others can read and check it? Give two reasons.
