Data: what is in a solar panel?

A rooftop solar panel is a sandwich of materials. A glass sheet covers silicon cells joined by copper strips. The cells are sealed in a layer of the polymer EVA, which is cross-linked when the panel is made. An aluminium frame holds it all together.

2. A worn-out panel has a mass of 20 kg. Use Table 1 to calculate the mass of glass, of aluminium and of polymer in it.

3. For each part of the panel, name the type of bonding or structure and one property that suits its job.

4. Recyclers normally remove the aluminium frame first. Using the unit’s ideas about metals and finite resources, suggest two reasons why.

5. The EVA seal is cross-linked. Use Lesson 17 to explain why this makes it hard to separate the glass, silicon and copper when the panel is recycled.

Question: “Does the amount of glycerol in a starch bioplastic film affect how far the film stretches before it breaks?” (Glycerol acts as a plasticiser.)
