Observations that changed investigations — Apply worksheet
Original practice. Write explanations that distinguish observations, evidence and claims.
Name: __________________________ Date: ______________
Question 1
Compare a single plate observation with a controlled test of a prepared extract. What extra evidence can the test offer?
Question 2
A cylinder records 35.0 to 42.0 mL for an object with attached air. Explain the likely effect on estimated object volume.
Question 3
Why should a historical timeline identify several researchers and stages?
Teacher answer key — 3 questions
Model responses identify the essential ideas. Accept scientifically correct alternatives that address the question; wording need not match exactly.
- A suitable comparison can isolate whether the extract changes growth relative to the control. It remains separate from human safety or clinical effectiveness.
- 7.0 mL is the measured displacement, but attached air contributes volume, so it can overestimate the object’s actual volume.
- It prevents conflating initial observation with validation and practical development and makes clear which evidence addressed each question.
