FuseA thin metal wire that melts when current exceeds the fuse rating, breaking the circuit. Protects cables from overheating ($P = I^2 R$).
Circuit breakerA resettable switch that opens when current exceeds a set value. Performs the same protective function as a fuse.
RCD (Residual Current Device)Detects an imbalance between active and neutral current (≥30 mA) and trips in <10 ms. Protects people from electrocution.
Earth wireA low-resistance connection between the metallic case of an appliance and earth. If a live wire touches the case, a large fault current flows and blows the fuse.
Cross-lesson links: L09 showed that P = I²R determines how much energy a conductor dissipates as heat. L10 applies this directly to safety: fuses melt when P = I²R exceeds safe levels in the cable; RCDs save lives by detecting leakage as small as 30 mA, far below the fuse trip current. AS 3000:2018 is the legal codification of these physics principles.
